Tropical waterlilies grow annually in cold climate, they start during first warm days and grows and flowers up to late autumn, longer than hardy waterlilies.
When season became cold is possible keep bulbs alive to start the new plants in spring.
Bulbs can be harvested below the plant rhizome near his base.
They must be cleaned from soil and cutted the roots.
To store in correct way you need plastic bag with ziplock, a synthetic cloth, a felt tip pen to write variety name and some water in a bowl.
Very important is to have the bulbs well cleaned from soil and excessive roots to avoid rot.
Bulbs must be kept wet until being placed in the plastic bags.
To start cut a piece of the synthetic cloth big enough to keep inside the bulb or the bulbs I want to store.
Put the synthetic cloth in the water, remove and squeeze it, keeping it moist but not wet.
Wet the bulb to store in the water and wrap in the moist cloth.
Write with the felt tip pen on the plastic bag the name of the plant and the date of storage.
Insert the bulb wrapped in moist cloth inside the plastic bag.
Close tightly the ziplock plastic bag to avoid enter air.
Store the packed bulbs in a box and place the box in a room whith adequate temperature (15-20°C – 59-68°F), can be stored in a bedroom above a wardrobe, or below a sofa in a hall.
Bulbs stored this way can survive for years, need to keep under control the wet inside the plastic bag, if the content is drying you need to moist again the cloth and the bulb and store again in the plastic bag.
To restart the plant is enough take the bulb in spring, plant with clay soil and one pondtabbs in a small pot. When the plants make first flower you can transplant in a bigger pot adding 1-2 pondtabbs.
